Rus warrior by VendelRus Rus warrior by VendelRus
Me in my Rus/viking hard kit.

I'm portraying a central swedish viking with eastern estonian-russian trading connections.

I'm wearing a helmet from Gniezno, a leather lamellar armor, a chain mail, a gotland shield, a peterson type S sword, an hour glass quiver, a rus cavalry axe and various rus-scandinavian bling.

Helmet kind of looks Mongol too but i guess rus and mongol armors influenced each other

Not mongol, Magyar. Both the Mongol and the Magyar are horse riding people though. =)

Hello,

Fantastic outfit, one of the best I've seen.

I was wondering, where you obtained your pouch from.
I like it very much.

Cheers,
Dave - Australia.

I made this pouch. It is an up scaled version of the Birka bag. The fittings a bought from a Ukrainian guy many years ago.

Thanks!

Very very nice outfit, is the lamellar armor made by yourself?

Thank you! I made this a long time ago. Truth be told there are no evidence pointing to lamellar made from leather ever being used in the north.

yeah, but there is evidence from viking people using lamellar armor,so they knew the technology, therefore some of them probably made one from leather
"More than thirty lamellae (individual plates for lamellar armour) were found in Birka, Sweden, in 1877, 1934 and 1998-2000.[28] They were dated to the same approximate period as the Gjermundbu mailshirt (900-950) and may be evidence that some Vikings wore this armour, which is a series of small iron plates laced together or sewed to a stout fabric or leather cats shirt. There is considerable debate however as to whether the lamellae in question were in the possession of a Scandinavian resident or a foreign mercenary."

I am very familiar with the original finds from Birka. I have a metal lamellar to (but no pics).

It is a you say, not easy to know if a Scandinavian wore these or if they were worn by a foreign mercenary. It is safe to say that this type of armor were very unusual though.
There are no evidence for any leather armor during the viking age. In fact it is hard to find evidence of leather armor at all.

Thank you for your comment :)

yeah, i see. it's a ineteresting topic, maybe they didn't use leather armor because it was highly inefective for the vikings. thanks for replying.

Yeah, there is not much proof about leather lamellar armor by Vikings and Rus Vikings. But it looks good.

Wow, well thought out armor. I can see the Russian and Viking influences. ;) I'll bet that chain-mail beard would save the neck quite a few times.

The exact look of the chainmail in the neck is not known. This look is speculative but looks really cool =)

Is the mail coif part of the hauberk or the helm?

It's part of the helm. It hangs from side to side and on top of a hook at the nasal piece.
