This is a pic of my new shoes (or one of them anyway). Like my previous shoes they are based on a York and Hedeby finds. These ones was not fun to make. It took two hours to turn them (inside out) and my fingers hurt for a week after.
Next pair will most likely be of Oseberg type (softer on the hands =) )

The shoes are handstiched with hand waxed three threaded linen thread. The leather has not been dyed but the shoes have been waxed to shelter from water.

oh you are welcome, it is really beautiful due to its simplicity and the traditional fairy tale look.

Where do you get your leather and what grade/weight and type of tan do you use? I've been working off of a large 8 square foot section of 2mm leather my grandfather gave me. Now that I've used just about all of it over the course of 2 years for various projects, I'm not sure where to find leather for projects like this, nor does my grandfather. And is the sole like 2 ply or just a heavier grade? Thanks!

Hi! Sorry for my late reply. I get all my leather from a local (or semi local it is one hour by car ) tannery. 2-4 mm is suitable for shoes. For the sole you will need harder and thicker leather. I use cow leather for both shoe and sole but goat is just as good if not better. I do not dye my leather but soaks it in olive oil to get a red brown color.

Good luck :)

Hi!

No, I am sad to say I do not do any commissioned work. I really love to do this and I decided early on not to mix this interest with work or money =)

There is no pattern for these shoes. I made them entirely from pictures of actual finds.

Good luck! =)

These are insanely beautiful !!

You posted back in 2010 that in 2 years you would probably think these were junk and make something new. :) How do you feel now? How have they held up?
